Slim clues, few leads, no convictions....yet.
Word on the street is that a couple of boys associated with and possible students at Ballard High School are responsible for starting the fire that destroyed the 100 year old barn at EP Tom Sawyer State Park in late July of 2010.
LMPD officers hope that another student will actually grow up and be a man or woman and report the criminals to the authorities starting with the Resource Officer at the school.
A call has gone out to NBC's Chris Hansen to visit Ballard with his famous video camera crew. Can anyone at that school spell "Dateline"?
Neighbors of EP Tom Sawyer State Park
This blog was created to allow both neighbors and friends of E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park to show their concerns, likes, dislikes, gratitude and creative thoughts how our park can be the best it can be. Please respect this blog and others who post to it like you do the natural beauty that makes E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park the jewel it is.

Fire Cost Taxpayers Thousands: $1000 Reward

This is just part of the resources that were expertly mobilized by multiple fire stations in order to bring the arson fire at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park under control.
Please, if you have any information about this crime of arson call 800-27-ARSON. You do not have to give your name and you could get a reward of $1,000.00.
Arson Ivestigation Fully Underway
Today, Major Henry Ott of the Louisville Metro Arson Squad (502-574-3721) reported that the fire that burned the old barn on the East side of E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park was arson and that they have assembled a skilled and adept team to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Witnesses saw two young (possible under 18 years of age) white males running away from the barn area shortly before smoke from the barn areas was noticed. One of the males was wearing a t-shirt with "Ballard" written on it. Obviously this means that potentially one of the perps may have been or still is a student of what was at one time one of the finest high schools in the state. Well apparently education there has changed. Next you know they will be asking for money.
Anyone with information about this tragic fire and crime are requested to call 800-27-ARSON. Callers are eligible for a reward up to $1,000.00 and all information is strictly confidential.
It's our park. We deserve the park we allow it to become. Please call now if you know anything then to the park and enjoy what is left of it.

Most RCRC Members Could Not Care Less About Charity
The June Newsletter for the RCRC group that commandeered our EP Tom Sawyer State Park and named part of it after a convicted felon could care less about the Wings For Charity Event they host each year. How so dear Park Friend you say?
In the June 2010 newsletter the President of the RCRC laments that most RCRC members do not pitch in and that it is always the same few that do all the work for the charity event. He goes into further detail and quotes the pathetic response of one member, "This is becoming too much work and there isn't enough participation by our club members...I don't know why we just don't make a donation of $2500 from the club treasury to Kosair Charities and be done with it."
Read the whole pathetic story written in their own pathetic words at
http://www.rcrcky.com/newsletters/Propwash_2010_06.pdf
There you have it! So it turns out that the 'club' is not really a club at all. It's really just a few guys bent on trampling the private property rights of the neighbors of our park so they can feed their selfish hobby needs, make all the noise they want, put us all at risk of a plane that weighs over 55 pounds and fly at over 200 mph (note to club and park officials: there is a major transportation corridor just West of the air strip...hello), installed a whopping 500 foot long blacktop landing strip in an otherwise natural area that could have been allowed to return to its more virgin-esque nature.
Get ready for more noise and safety issues as the "Big Bird" fly in is almost upon us. It's next week and we can expect more noise, heavier planes and even greater risk of a major safety incident. You can expect that Dina-Might tipping the scale at almost 400 pounds will be there. God help us all.
Be a friend to the park, call park officials today and tell them to dump the RCRC from our park. Let's boot these 'club' guys out and get back to some peace and quiet. Let them go to one of the other many locations that are note close to or in a park (note to RCRC members see FAA AC 91-57 printed back in 1981) and finally, please take the sign down honoring felon Steve Henry.
Just who is to pay to restore the park area these people have damage back into a, well.... park? Can someone say class action lawsuit?
Remember...be a Park Friend today and every day!

Stop Political Crooks From Getting things Named for Them
E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park is not alone when it comes to having a lovely portion of our park named after an admitted felon. In our case it is none other than former Kentucky Attorney General Steve Henry. Like Henry now Charlie Rangel the Democratic Representative from the heart of Manhattan in New York City, one of the greatest cities in the history of the world.
While technically Representative Rangel has not been proven guilty (yet) its pretty clear that, as Ricky Ricardo used to say to Lucy when she go into trouble, "you've got a lot of (ex)-splaining to do". Surprisingly Steve Henry managed to avoid going to prison. It looks like Rep. Rangel will not be so fortunate.
One of the crimes Mr. Rangel is accused would have resulted in guess what? Getting a building at New York's famed City College named after him. Poor Steve Henry, he could only eek out a measly radio controlled airplane field. That radio controlled plane crowd must be sniffing fuel again. How else could one explain naming a part of our part after a criminal?
Still having a bunch of radio control plane freaks try to do a power grab and name something after someone as low as Steve Henry is one thing. What of the judgement of those who actually run EP Tom Sawyer State Park, a.k.a. our park? What does it say about them? Not much in my opinion. If you agree please let them know what you think.
With all the trouble that kids have trying to trap and draw them in what on earth are we doing allowing a group like the River City Radio Controllers who claim to be good citizens and support their sport as a good endeavor for kids which sounds fine to even me, but to honor a crook even after they know he is one. This group is absurd. Not to mention who do they think they are in commandeering our park, even a part of it, to name after someone other than E.P. Tom Sawyer. Someone call his daughter, Diane, over at CBS this story has wings of another kind.
Please Ricky, get that Lucy of yours under control!

New FAA Report States RC Planes like at RCRC MUST adhere to AC 91-57
Safety Risk Management Document (SRMD)
For Establishing a Baseline Hazard Analysis
For Operating
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)
In Class D Airspace
Version 5.0
September 10, 2008
http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ato/service_units/systemops/aaim/organizations/uas/media/UAS_Class_D_SRMD.pdf
See top of page 115 where it says: "Model Aircraft Unmanned aircraft flown for hobby purposes or recreation. Model aircraft must comply with Advisory Circular (AC) 91-57, Model Aircraft Operating Standards, published in 1981
This document upgrades the expectation of AC 91-57 from merely saying ...sight should be away from noise sensitive areas to the equivalent of shall or must. Since this document was made public in 2008 and is now in its 5th version it is pretty clear that AMA (RCRC's government lobbyist) and likely RCRC members have known about this requirement but chose not to do the right thing and move out but to dig in and stay. See recent RCRC club newsletters. They are planning to make even more noise.
http://www.rcrcky.com/newsletters/Propwash_2010_02.pdf
One thing that is pretty clear reading the RCRC's club newsletters is that they have a lot of members who don't follow the rules. Pretty much every month there is notice that some members break the rules. Well, what do you expect from a group that hijacked part of our park and after perhaps naming it innocently after Lt. Gov. Steve Henry still give him that honor even after he was a convicted felon. What's next the Charlie Manson Swim area over at the pool. Or how about the Jeffrey Dalmer Teen Swim.
No the fact is you did not hear it from them but you did hear it from Park Friend.
Note: According to RCRC newsletters, one responder, Crash as he likes to go by is none other that Jim Trombetti, 3115 Stonebridge Road Louisville, KY 40241 a member of the RCRC board. Write him and let him know what you think. Call the park and tell them you want your park back.
Do it quick, these guys have a legacy issue at stake. Since one of the first events that included gigantic planes occurred
From the RCRC Jan 2010 newsletter http://www.rcrcky.com/newsletters/Propwash_2010_01.pdf
The board is currently developing a calendar of events – some of which already have dates assigned to them.
Park Friend: Dates assigned to them by whom? The man behind the curtain? Do not underestimate this is a large and very well organized group. Based on their use of Lt. Gov. Steve Henry, they will stop at nothing.
The Snow-Bird fly-in has already taken place. The Wings for Kids Air Show will be held the first weekend of June, as it has been in years past. Several fly-ins are in the planning stages, including the Warbird, Electric-fly, and Cub events. In addition, a couple new fly-ins are being planned, including a Dawn-patrol and a giant-scale fly-in.
Park Friend: Here we go, now the nostalgia....
The very first IMAA sanctioned giant-scale fly-in was held in E.P. Tom Sawyer Park on the other side of the park, at the old field, back in 1981. Last fall, I started suggesting that we push for a giant-scale event this year, and then see if we couldn’t host an IMAA-sanctioned giant-scale event in 2011 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first IMAA giant-scale event held right here at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. It looks like we may be well on our way to accomplishing this.
Park Friend: Someone stop these nuts. They have forgotten that first the 'park' was not as big then and virtually no one lived nearby so it was no big deal to have a bunch of big RC planes making noise for a weekend. Also, at it was very close to and very large hospital, Central State Hospital, another violation of the FAA rules. Today the hospital is further away but now the park is surrounded by mostly residents. To these RC nuts, there nostalgia means more to them that being a good neighbor and let the other neighbors enjoy the peace and quiet of the park, not to mention violating the federal law.
Recall that the park is named in honor of a Louisville hero, E.P. Tom Sawyer who spent his life serving the public. He was a Naval Officer in World War II; a University of Louisville Law School graduate; and Jefferson County Judge Executive. He died tragically in an automobile accident on September 23, 1969. One of my former neighbors was a lawyer who worked with Tom. What would Tom think of those that named things for crooks, violated their own rules and violated the private property rights of park neighbors? Why I think he would rule to boot them out. If you disagree please comment.

Park RC Area Named for Admitted Felon: Steve Henry
While I'm sure Steve Henry, former Lt. Governor now convicted and admitted felon after what could only be called Medicate-gate likes the idea of a park area named after him but I think its a lousy idea and example for our kids. The Courier-Journal did a great job of keeping us all up to date on the illegal and improper billing activities of Mr. Henry over the years. Mr. Henry literally earned the reputation he currently holds. After his last run in with the law, as convicted felon, he still refused to fully take responsibility for his actions, blamed others then took a plea deal to avoid prison. Regular family guy indeed.
Some questions?????
Why allow anyone to name a part of our state park after anyone in the first place. After all it is already E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. Should we now call it E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park minus the Steve Henry RC plane area.
Why name an area of a state park after someone who has little to do with the state park. If we really wanted to name an area of our state park would we say pick a park ranger or manager or someone more deserving than a Lt.Gov. would is probably being repaid for a favor he did?
Why not wait until the person is dead for a while? That way we could be pretty sure he was not a criminal before we went and posted his name on a sign? What about our kids? Why should we honor a crook? Clearly we have better examples that Mr. Henry.
What special favor was done to entice RCRC members to erect a sign with his name on it?
Who approved the sign in the first place?

RCRC only Posts the AMA Rules They Like
Check out the Rules that RCRC posts on their web page. Note how they really call them just 'suggestions'. These folks prefer to defy the federal governmental authority the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under the auspices of the AMA but then they just pick and choose the rules they want to abide with and shuck the ones they don't. Below is a copy of the actual AMA rules. No suggestions here.
Read more at http://www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/2003/media/janfeb2003.pdf
Be sure and see the rule about six year old kids only being able to be on the flight line if they are the pilot. Whew, I'm resting better. Six year old pilots operating planes that can weigh up to 55 pounds unless you get a waiver and can fly Dina Might at over 350 pounds. What are these people thinking?
Then go to the RCRC web page and be shocked! http://www.rcrcky.com/home.htm
It contains just the rules they want.
from the FAA publication:
G:ENERAL
1) I will not fly my model aircraft in sanctioned events,
air shows, or model flying demonstrations until it has been
proven to be airworthy by having been previously, successfully
flight tested.
2) I will not fly my model higher than approximately 400
feet within 3 miles of an airport without notifying the airport
operator. I will give right-of-way and avoid flying in the proximity
of full-scale aircraft. Where necessary, an observer
shall be utilized to supervise flying to avoid having models
fly in the proximity of full-scale aircraft.
3) Where established, I will abide by the safety rules
for the flying site I use, and I will not willfully and deliberately
fly my models in a careless, reckless and/or dangerous
manner.
4) The maximum takeoff weight of a model is 55
pounds, except models flown under Experimental Aircraft
rules, [Document Number 549*].
5) I will not fly my model unless it is identified with my
name and address or AMA number, on or in the model.
Note: This does not apply to models while being flown indoors.
6) I will not operate models with metal-bladed propellers
or with gaseous boosts, in which gases other than air enter
their internal combustion engine(s); nor will I operate models
with extremely hazardous fuels such as those containing
tetranitromethane or hydrazine.
7) I will not operate models with pyrotechnics (any device
that explodes, burns, or propels a projectile of any kind)
including, but not limited to, rockets, explosive bombs
dropped from models, smoke bombs, all explosive gases
(such as hydrogen filled balloons), ground mounted devices
launching a projectile. The only exceptions permitted are
rockets flown in accordance with the National Model Rocketry
Safety Code or those permanently attached (as per
JATO use); also those items authorized for Air Show Team
use as defined by AST Advisory Committee (document
available from AMA HQ). In any case, models using rocket
motors as a primary means of propulsion are limited to a
maximum weight of 3.3 pounds and a G series motor. Note:
A model aircraft is defined as an aircraft with or without engine,
not able to carry a human being.
8) I will not consume alcoholic beverages prior to, nor
during, participation in any model operations.
9) Children under 6 years old are only allowed on the
flight line as a pilot or while under flight instruction.
RADIO CONTROL
1) I will have completed a successful radio equipment
ground range check before the first flight of a new or repaired
model.
2) I will not fly my model aircraft in the presence of
spectators until I become a qualified flier, unless assisted by
an experienced helper.
3) At all flying sites a straight or curved line(s) must be
established in front of which all flying takes place with the
other side for spectators. Only personnel involved with flying
the aircraft are allowed at or in the front of the flight line.
Intentional flying behind the flight line is prohibited.
4) I will operate my model using only radio control frequencies
currently allowed by the Federal Communications
Commission. (Only properly licensed Amateurs are authorized
to operate equipment on Amateur Band frequencies.)
5) Flying sites separated by three miles or more are
considered safe from site-to site interference, even when
both sites use the same frequencies. Any circumstances
under three miles separation require a frequency management
arrangement which may be either an allocation of
specific frequencies for each site or testing to determine
that freedom from interference exists. Allocation plans or interference
test reports shall be signed by the parties involved
and provided to AMA Headquarters. Documents of
agreement and reports may exist between (1) two or more
AMA Chartered Clubs, (2) AMA clubs and individual AMA
members not associated with AMA Clubs, or (3) two or
more individual AMA members, [Document Number 551*].
6) For Combat, distance between combat engagement
line and spectator line will be 500 feet per cubic inch of engine
displacement. (Example: .40 engine = 200 feet.); electric
motors will be based on equivalent combustion engine
size. Additional safety requirements will be per the RC
Combat section of the current Competition Regulations.
7) At air shows or model flying demonstrations a single
straight line must be established, one side of which is for
flying, with the other side for spectators.
8) With the exception of events flown under AMA Competition
rules, after launch, except for pilots or helpers
being used, no powered model may be flown closer than
25 feet to any person.
9) Under no circumstances may a pilot or other person
touch a powered model in flight.
Organized RC Racing Event
10) An RC racing event, whether or not an AMA Rule
Book event, is one in which model aircraft compete in flight
over a prescribed course with the objective of finishing the
course faster to determine the winner.
A. In every organized racing event in which contestants,
callers and officials are on the course:
1. All officials, callers and contestants must properly
wear helmets, which are OSHA, DOT, ANSI, SNELL or
NOCSAE approved or comparable standard while on the
race course.
2. All officials will be off the course except for the starter
and their assistant.
3. “On the course” is defined to mean any area beyond
the pilot/staging area where actual flying takes place.
B. I will not fly my model aircraft in any organized racing
event which does not comply with paragraph A above or
which allows models over 20 pounds unless that competition
event is AMA sanctioned.
C. Distance from the pylon to the nearest spectator (line)
will be in accordance with the current Competition Regulations
under the RC Pylon Racing section for the specific
event pending two or three pylon course layout.
11) RC Night Flying is limited to low performance models
(less than 100 m.p.h.). The models must be equipped
with a lighting system that clearly defines the aircraft’s attitude
at all times.
FREE FLIGHT
1) I will not launch my model aircraft unless at least 100
feet downwind of spectators and automobile parking.
2) I will not fly my model unless the launch area is clear
of all persons except my mechanic and officials.
3) I will employ the use of an adequate device in flight to
extinguish any fuses on the model after it has completed its
function.
CONTROL LINE
1) I will subject my complete control system (including
safety thong, where applicable) to an inspection and pull
test prior to flying. Pull test will be in accordance with the
current Competition Regulations for applicable model category.
Models not fitting a specific category as detailed shall
use those pull test requirements for Control Line Precision
Aerobatics.
2) I will assure that my flying area is safely clear of all utility
wires or poles.
3) I will assure that my flying area is safely clear of all
non-essential participants and spectators before permitting
my engine to be started.
4) I will not fly a model closer than 50 feet to any electrical
power line.
GAS TURBINE
1) I will not operate any turbine engine (axial or centrifugal
flow) unless I have obtained a special waiver for such
specific operations.
2) I will fly my model in compliance with all requirements
specified in AMA Safety Regulations for Model Aircraft Gas
Turbines, [Document Number 513*], at all times.
GIANT SCALE RACING
1) I will fly my model in compliance with all requirements
specified in AMA Required Safety Standards for Giant Scale
Racing, [Document Number 535*], at all times.

FAA Reacts to Control Out of Control RC Plane Operators
FAA issues what they call a "Significant Document" as part of Federal Docket # FAA-2006-25714 titled "Unmanned Aircraft Operations in the National Airspace System"
It is part of a rule making process used by our government to seek comments for anyone.
http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/significant_documents/index.cfm?fuseAction=c.dspDocumentInformation&documentID=21998&documentTypeID=0
This document shows the remarkably extreme level that so called RC model airplane operators will go to abuse not just private property rights but our own federal law. Fortunately legislators were quick on the throttle for this one and grounded them before they could really hurt someone.
Note that in the section called "Recreational/Sport Use of Model Airplanes" it states: "Users are advised to avoid noise sensitive areas such as parks, schools, hospitals and churches.
Now let's the RCRC area is not just in the vicinity to a park it is in one. It is also in the vicinity to a church and a school. Well at least its not close to a hospital although that might actually be handy if one of these numskulls were to hurt someone with say a 55 pound RC aircraft flown by a six year old.
Only a convicted felon like Steve Henry whose brief political career ended when he was caught cooking the books when it came to Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements. Keep in mind he would have been committing those felonies while he is doing something which would cause the RCRC to name part of our park after him. Now lets see what might he have been doing that was also not in the public's interest? Was he...pulling some strings at the FAA to get them to overlook something they have oversight responsibilities? I report...you decide. You wont see this on Fox News they are too busy keeping Obama in line.

RCRC Club Rules, Guidelines, Suggestions -Violations or Not: You Decide. Just remember RCRC does not enforce anything.
Park Fiend: Hey neighbors be sure and note item 22. RCRC members are supposed to call the Park Manager when a plane is lost and left park property. How is that supposed to happen when he is only there 8AM-5PM Monday to Friday? What if its a weekend or holiday or after hours? What if he is away for a meeting, sick or on vacation?
Be sure to note what it says right below that these so called "General Rules and Safety Guidelines" are "Suggested Rules ( Rules not enforced by RCRC but strongly recommended)"
Well what the heck are these Rules? Guidelines? No,....just some suggestions which are not enforced by RCRC. No English major in this crowd. It turns out the only enforcement is the FAA. God Save us all.
General Rules and Safety Guidelines
Revised and adopted January 3, 2003
The Following Safety Rules are rules created by the Board of Directors and Club members and should be observed by all club members and guests. (Note): Some of the following rules are not enforced by the RCRC Club, but are strongly encouraged to be followed and observed for your safety and the safety of others. These rules will be called Suggested Rules and will be noted following the General Rules and Safety Guidelines.
Sincerely,
Safety Committee
General Rules
1.First and foremost, all members must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the boundaries of our flying site. Violations of these boundaries can result in the loss of our site. Every member must be responsible for monitoring another's flight pattern and POLITELY make them aware of any boundary violations. Click here to see a full-size map of the our Flying Boundries (150K) (posted at each flight station)
2.All transmitters must be kept in the impound area, or a secured area, unless you have your frequency pin and are ready to fly.
3.You must have the frequency pin in your possession when you're flying, even if you are the only one at the field. (Someone else on your frequency may come to fly while you are flying; and if so, a disaster). More than one AMA card may be placed in a frequency slot in order to help coordinate the use of the “frequency pin” between pilots on the same radio frequency. However, possession of the “frequency pin” always determines who has flying privileges at any given time.
4.Pilots may possess only one “frequency pin” at a time.
5.All Pilots must place a current original AMA card or proof of AMA membership in the appropriate frequency slot before flying, unless under the direct supervision of a qualified instructor as outlined in the current AMA regulations.
6.Under no circumstances is any club member permitted to touch or remove any other club members’ card from the slot.
7.Check all battery packs just prior to the first flight, and frequently thereafter. (Just because they have been on charge for 14 hours, doesn't necessarily mean they are charged). You should also conduct an occasional field test by checking to see if the planes controls respond to the transmitter at a distance of 100 feet with the transmitter antenna collapsed. This rule deserves your utmost attention, because, an out-of-control plane could cost us our flying site.
8.Frequency pins shall not be removed from the flying field.
9.All planes must be positioned in line with the pit area tables with the engines pointing toward the field prior to starting. (Do not start engines in any other part of the pit area). This is very critical for everyone's safe
Do not taxi planes into the pit area.
10.When you are ready to fly, get your plane in position at the edge of the runway; look for any planes that may be on the runway or in the process of landing etc.; then let your intentions be known by SHOUTING to all pilots on the flight line that you are taking off.
11.When you are ready to land, let your intentions be known by SHOUTING to all pilots on the flight line that you are landing.
12.Keep everyone on the flight line apprised of your intent to conduct certain maneuvers or of any emergencies that might arise. (Dead stick, low pass etc.)
13.Planes must be taxied or physically retrieved from the runway as quickly as possible.
When going onto the runway, you must first make sure it is safe and then communicate to all pilots on the flight line that you are going onto or crossing the runway.
14.When you leave the runway, communicate to all pilots on the flight line that the runway is clear.
15.The wind direction will dictate the flight pattern to follow; if taking off to the left, the pattern will be right turns; if taking off to the right, the pattern will be left turns. (All pilots must adhere to this rule; especially when the air space is crowded).
16.All flying must be conducted from inside one of the designated flight stations. (Unless there are club approved events.)
17.Be cautious when talking to a pilot while they are flying or in the process of starting an engine, distractions can cause accidents.
18.The only persons permitted in the pit area during flying are those persons holding an AMA membership. Family members of pilots may enter the pit area, but must remain in the shelter or no closer to the pit area than the field table. All members are responsible for monitoring this guideline. (Exception: special occasions.)
19.All pets must be on leashes and remain behind the field cable.
20.No flying will be permitted at the field during mowing of area inside of cables.
21.No smoking is permitted inside the safety cable. This includes the area in and around the shelter. (Added February 3, 2009)
22.Anytime a plane is lost and presumed to have left the park property, the park manager should be notified immediately. (Added April 29, 2009)
Suggested Rules ( Rules not enforced by RCRC but strongly recommended)
1.For your safety and the safety of others do not accelerate your engine beyond a fast idle until you have positioned yourself behind the airplane. Standing in front, over, or beside a propeller turning 8000-10000 RPM's plus, is "Very Dangerous".
2.When you are having difficulty tuning or getting an engine to run properly, or you are breaking-in a new engine, take your plane to the south end of the pit area for this purpose, so as not to disturb the pilots on the flight line. A continuous running engine behind you can be very annoying.
3.Be careful about loose clothing that could get caught in the turning prop.
4.Be careful with items in your shirt pocket that could fall into a turning prop.
5.Be careful with smoking around the fuel at all times. (Highly Flammable.)
6.Make sure you have the skills for the type plane you are about to fly; just because you mastered a trainer plane, does not necessarily qualify you to fly a more high performance plane. There are varying flight characteristics in planes, so do not be afraid to ask a more experienced pilot for help.
7.If flying field is extremely busy it may be a good idea to have a spotter close by you.
8.Pilots of new or repaired aircraft may request clear air space for testing aircraft, please be understanding and work together.
Please contact a club officer with any questions.

Crash and Minutiae
Crash: Well Park friend, Felon is correctly spelled F-E-L-O-N. Not as your post spelled it FELON.
Park Friend: Thanks for the spelling lesson Crash. How about some substantive responses to the issues of safety and private property rights?
Park Friend: Note to Crash, I am afraid I cannot post you comments to the kid-friendly crowd until which time you remove the name-calling and threats. By the way I have posted a copy of the RCRC rules so other neighbors can see and learn first-hand when a RCRC member is breaking them.
Park Friend: Hey, Crash are you one of the RCRC club officers aka Jim Schroder , VP and Treasurer? I believe in transparency how about you?

Park Grants Area To RCRC in Violation of FAA
Officials at our park must have missed this one. The FAA specifically states: don't put RC planes in a park because of guess what? Noise and safety. This publication came out in 1981. It's even posted on the AMA web page, but of course not the RCRC web page or the park's for that matter.

RCRC Offically Names State Park Area For Convicted Felon
Park Friend: The RCRC who is granted an area for their exclusive use after a convicted felon. None other that Kentucky's former Lt. Governor Steve Henry.

What gall these people have. First of all, the park is our park, not the RCRC's and certainly not Steve Henry's. In case you have sniffed too many gas fumes please refer to the big sign out front where it says E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park and not Steve Henry's park. Secondly, Steve Henry is a convicted felon. While once Kentucky’s Lieutenant Governor, he later earned fame as the doc who could not keep a record straight even if his life depended on it.

What are these people doing naming an area that we allow them to use after a criminal? Was naming the park after Steve Henry some sort of quid-pro-quo? Do we need to call the CJ or attorney general to launch an investigation into how such a thing came to be? Is this the good judgment we can come to expect from the RCRC group, the same one that trashes my private property rights forces me have to listen to noisy RC aircraft the size of small cars ?
Let's say for a minute that the RCRC actually respected the rights of others regarding safety and noise, which they do not according to the US Constitution. And, let's say for a minute that the RCRC had some legitimate right name an area of a state park, which they do not. And, let's say for a minute that they have a right to erect a sign doing so (this matter needs more research to see if RCRC broke another Law or Regulation for KY State Parks). Forgetting all that, then why can't they name it after a local hero who really did something good and was not a criminal? How about a police, fire or EMS person who may even have fallen in the line of duty? How about a US Service member who gave their life in service for our great country? How about a brave child who was helped by the Crusade For Children who's story of courage lives on to help us today? These RCRC people are so bent on serving their own needs. I think they have caused enough trouble and need to be booted out. Wouldn't a playground on the west side of our park better serve those who live on that side town? Wouldn't such a change be better for all? Setting aside a special area of the park for special clubs who generally only use it on weekends and holidays, the same time period I cherish my peace and quiet seems an utter waste. If you disagree why the RCRC should not be removed from the special area of our park, please write to this blog. Please invite your fellow RCRC-ers about this blog and ask them to comment. Remember, please keep it kid friendly.

B) Where is your proof of park officials not turning in all these miscreants you seem to see everywhere? C) No, I don’t have a beard and what difference would that make? D) You will never be a charitable person as you can only see the “zero-Sum” game. Charity for charities sake I can see is not in you. E) If you have a problem with liberals, that is for another discussion, not this. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=PKZ3580#test
BTW here is the link to the “dangerous” plane the person was flying on July 21, 2010 that you photographed. Why don’t you publish ALL Comments and see what you get.
Park Friend: Crash, I was withholding things from your prior post because they did not make sense or included an incomplete sentence. I’ll go ahead and post it this time but there is just no way I can tolerate improper sentence structure no more than our fellow park neighbors tolerate things like the arson there on July 15.
In and earlier response to a post Crash wrote: “The R/C area is clearly marked and adhered to per club rules.”
Park Friend: Crash, this sentence would not make it past a 6th grade English teacher (not counting once in Jefferson County Public Schools). It contains a split infinitive and an abstract indirect subject. Just how can ‘club rules’ adhere to anything? Well you asked for it so there you go.
Park Friend: Crash, it appears by your comments which seem to ignore the bigger issue of safety and security at our park, the proverbial elephant in the room, and focus on the questionable areas of the law that seems to be violated by those in the RC plane area, not to mention your screen name of Crash, that you are basically only concerned with the RC plane area. Seems to me that you think they, and you now by association, care little about the important issue of the law while they stomp on my private property rights and those of other neighbors. You ignore evidence of a RCRC member violating club rules. Furhtermore, you accuse me of being uncharitable (just more name calling by a liberal). Crash, based on your link, YOU are the guy that was flying the plane from the back of SMART car. That was very DUMB and in direct violation of RCRC rules. That explains your pendency for crime, you are all about breaking rules at the same time saying how RCRC member abide by them.
Park Friend: Well folks you heard it here first. RCRC club member thumb their nose at rules from their very own authority then try to hold themselves out there as noble ones. What HYPOCRISY ! What do you expect from a group that hijacks part of our state park and then names it after a convicted felon, Steve Henry. Of all people!
Previously Crash blogged “Most of the members are retired, worked all their lives fellow Americans who have a passion for aircraft.”
Park Friend: You would think retired people would be smarter than to associate with someone who plead guilty to Medicare and Medicaid billing fraud, not to mention all kinds of other billing fraud issues that involved public money. Way to go Crash, birds of a feather as they say. No wonder you are so tolerant of crime in the park, noise from planes that infringe the rights of others and so on. Do you just make up rules to suit yourself? Didn’t Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Sadam Hussein do the same thing? America detests this sort of thing. We are better for it and we will not tolerate such arrogance.
Park Friend: Do I understand correctly that the RCRC recently erected a sign naming the designated RC plane area after Steve Henry? What gall these people have. First of all, the park is our park. Please see the big sign out front where it says E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park and not Steve Henry. Secondly, Steve Henry is a convicted felon. While once Kentucky’s Lieutenant Governor, he later earned fame as the doc who could not keep a record straight even if his life depended on it.

The old barn was used by park staff to store fertillizer which resulted in the blaze being so difficult to control and douse.

RCRC AMA Member Disregards Club Rules
On July 21, 2010 at approx. 2:30 PM E.S.T. a RCRC club and AMA member was observed launching his RC plane not from the area set aside for such activities but while standing at the back of his SMART car which was parked in the shade on the far west side of the driveway and parking lot. Such action even to this observer would seem to violate even the lax rules that RCRC members apparently apply to themselves.
A few moments later the plane crashed to the east on or near the runway where it should have been launched from. Imagine if you or your child happened to venture into not the restricted area near the runway but the public area like the driveway where I was. Note to Crash: this is a very dangerous hobby especially when RCRC club members do as they please. To me this is just more of RCRC thumbing their noses at me and my property rights. Perhaps if RCRC would just follow its own rules we all might get a little respect.

This is the guy that launched his RC aircraft from his car and not on the field where it would have been much safer and in accordance with club rules and park safety requirements. He is standing where he went to retrieve it after it crashed shortly after takeoff. He never appeared to be in complete control of the aircraft and seemed more interested to make it be more out of control than in.

This is the guys SMART car where he apparently took the device out of a box and launched it from. Why is it that dumb people can buy SMART car but it still makes them look dumb when they do things like this.

This is sign placed by our park's staff that reads "Wildlife Habitat Enhancement Area". It is located at the west side of the park adjacent to the parking lot just south of the RC plane area. Notice that it does not say wildlife enhancement area. Most of the wildlife has likely run off due to all the noise. So park officials have decided to do the next best thing if you can't have critter well then how about the critter environment sans critters. Where are the animal rights activists when you need them? Someone call P.E.T.A., please.

RCRC Club Member Breaks Rules
Crash Landing
Park Friend: Crash, thanks for your timely comments. By the way, you don’t need to keep posting the same thing over and over again. Give me some time and I will get right back to you. I have broken your comments up a bit so I could comment on each important one. Warning, this is a family friendly post so while I had to edit out a few of the liberties you took, rest assured that if offensive material, name calling or ranting continues it will get you kicked off this blog. Nuff said, I’m sure, now …onto the blog.
To "Park Friend"
Crash: Some of your comments show a irrational fear mentality that I can see as very self destructive. Reporting that a barn was set ablaze by children is legitimate reason for vigilance, but to accompany that with an example in Seattle is ludicrous and feeble attempt to frighten people.
Park Friend: And your more researched reporting on crime and public safety in our own and other state parks around the country has revealed ….. just what? We all should realize that serious crime is on the rise in our state parks notably our own, E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
Crash: What sort of "shenanigan" do you refer? What "corruption" of park officials are you accusing them of?
Park Friend: How about our park’s ranger in his failure to enforce the law and turn offenders into the local police for things like: trespassing, destruction of public property, possession of alcohol, illegal use to banned substances to name a few. Let me be more direct, this should help you. How about dereliction of duty?
Crash: You believe that your interests are above hundreds of others that use the park.
Park Friend: Hmmm, I believe there is a consensus that will show that neighbors of EP Tom Sawyer Park will not stand idly by while criminal activity is allowed to occur in our park nor will we allow people to make excessive noise that we find disturbing. Please see the Louisville Metro Government Noise Ordinance. For information on the Louisville Noise Ordinance please visit http://www.louisvilleky.gov/NR/rdonlyres/B40742AE-83B4-4389-A73C-7FE6344AFA41/0/noiseordinance.pdf
Crash: The R/C area is clearly marked and adhered to per club rules.
Park Friend: Crash, thanks for bring up the club rules. Would you mind posting them on this blog so they can be accessed by our neighbors?
Crash: Your silly attempt to connect R/C fliers with "radical Islam" leading to "big trouble" was an absurd thing to say.
Park Friend: Don’t you wish more people made silly attempts at making connections when suspicious people began taking jet pilot lessons in Florida only later to pilot planes into buildings on 9/11? By the way, Crash, do you have a full beard?
Crash: You say that the R/C club attempts to "ameliorate" the risk by hosting a charity event. How crass a statement.
Park Friend: Actually Crash, this statement is both refined and qualified. Is it not a strategy of the RC plane community to host charity events for various worthy causes in order to curry favor with the RC plane community’s continued use of public land (and continued exposure to noise)? Seems using charity to secure access to public land at the expense of others is a common theme among other clubs. A quick Google search found references to at least 25 charity events this year alone. Care to comment?
Crash: You threaten a imagined attack helicopter destroying someone’s plane in another state. From your letter I assume you were the person responsible for stomping on a downed plane, and, were warned of prosecution.
Park Friend: Crash, I never threaten. Surely you are aware of the advances in technology that allow even recreational RC planes to deploy all kinds of payloads including fake bombs that can drop and hit a target on the ground. Is this really the kind of machine you want in the hands of some miscreant bent on destroying more than a 100 year old barn. As for a damaged plane, I don’t know anything about such. I believe it is proper to respect the private property and private property rights of others. Do you believe this?
Crash: You knew when you moved here you were moving next to a PUBLIC PARK.
Park Friend: E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park is one of a number of State Parks in Kentucky. As such the property is deeded to the state so the state owns it. The state provides set of rules for the parks to make them available to the public under certain rules and conditions. http://parks.ky.gov/regulations.htm
Note the opening statement to these laws and regulations reads: In order to protect visitors and the park and in order to promote quality visitor experiences for everyone, there are certain activities that are prohibited and restricted within Kentucky State Parks. These prohibitions and restrictions are based on Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS-state law), Kentucky Administrative Regulations (KAR) and Kentucky Department of Parks Policy Memoranda.
When I read words like …in order to protect and …in order to promote quality visitor experience for everyone. I don’t know about you Crash but I’m thinking words mean things and actions have consequences. So these Laws and Regulations are there to protect me and you also. Firstly, protect from what? Let’s start with crime like the recent Arson, Robbery and Assault. Leave the killings in a Seattle area park aside for the moment, if you must. I for one would like to known that I and others are protected when at the park. Hard to believe Crash that even you could find a way to disagree here.
Secondly, …quality visitor experiences for everyone. This does not say quality visitor experiences for just the RCRC who clearly make a lot of noise and apparently endanger others when they have Dead Stick moments. So why do I have to put up with the noise of gigantic unmanned planes with engines the size of weed-whackers? Not only does it seem unfair and unsafe it is against the KY State Parks own Laws and Regulations.
Thirdly, Crash if we are going to continue this dialog you are going to have to gain some control. By my count you have called me names or accused me personally including: Ludicrous, feeble, silly, absurd, crass and so on. I cleaned up your comments so they would be safe around the kitchen table and the kids. (Might come in handy with that Wings-for-Kids thing they do). With name calling you just earned my fulsome respect. Ball is in your court on that one neighbor.
Accusing me of destruction of private property is over the top. Do you have any evidence? Of course not, if you did I would encourage you to call the police immediately. Crash, you miss the point. This is all about private property rights as a neighbor as well as the Laws and Regulations of our park. I have a right, as you do, which includes among other things to not be exposed to noise as comes from the RC plane area. The park has responsibilities to protect and enhance the visitor experience of everyone not just the RC plane area crowd.
Private property rights for individuals are guaranteed to all in the US Constitution. This single feature distinguishes our form of government along with the Declaration of Independence’s ‘Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness’ more that any aspect of common law in the world. In this case I feel my rights are being infringed by all the noise and lack of access to our entire park and that I should have a reasonable expectation to safety when in the park. Where does your misoneistic view come from? Are you a follower of the Qur’an too?
Note to Crash: The advertisement along North Hourstborn Parkway for Wings-for Kids appears to be a violation of KY State Park Laws and Regulations prohibiting advertisement of this sort.
Crash: You knew when you moved here you were moving next to a PUBLIC PARK.
Park Friend: Crash, when I moved into the neighborhood I did not expect the noise and safety issues. However, I did know there were some liberals here.
Crash: Please move.
Park Friend: Crash, hey, there you go again buddy? Are you bi-polar or something? If not, grab yourself a copy of the US Constitution and do a little brush up on that private property right thing. Be careful neglecting private property is slope that is more slippery that some KY bluegrass doused with RC plane fuel.
Girl Seriously Injured by Radio Controlled Aircraft in Park
Being around RC aircraft can be very dangerous and result in serious injury. Check out this Fox News report posted to YouTube about an incident from Tampa earlier in 2010. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNZwYHI9xS4
While all RC aircraft operators may not be so careless and disrespectful, clearly some are. Stay clear of and use caution when you are around RC aircraft. They can be very dangerous.
For those hiking about in E.P. Tom Sawyer Park this generally means paying close attention if you walk the park's western boundary trail. This path takes you very close to the RC plane area. Hazards in this area occur frequently when RC aircraft stray out of control or are allowed to venture beyond the invisible boundary that surrounds the RC plane area which club members are supposed to remain in. so how does an old guy with poor vision actually see the invisible boundary way up in ht sky? Maybe Crash can help out here and explain this. How about it Crash? Can you help our neighbors here?
Hikers should be alert to anyone yelling "Dead Stick". For a hiker there are of course dead sticks all about the park. But, "Dead Stick" in RC aircraft lingo means they have lost power and can no longer control their 'toy' properly. Keep in mind these toys are really unmanned aircraft, can weigh over ten pounds and travel in excess of 100 MPH. When you hear "Dead Stick" keep your head down and run the other way as fast as you can, lest you end up dead yourself. When you are running away, be sure to avoid stepping on the delicate fauna and nesting ground birds that grow and live in our park. We would want anyone destroying the natural beauty of our park, would we.
